Motor Vehicle Hotline

If you own or drive a truck that you feel has a safety-related defect, you should not only contact your dealer or repair shop for diagnosis and repair, you should also report the problem to the Hotline of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The Motor Vehicle Hotline specializes in gathering complaints about safety problems in motor vehicles and motor vehicle equipment such as trailers.  This information is then directed to the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI),  to help identify defects in the design, manufacture or performance of motor vehicles or motor vehicle equipment which may lead to recalls.  The Hotline can be dialed toll free at 1-888-327-4236.

Established in 1975, the Auto Safety Hotline is the agency's single point of contact , where you can obtain information about motor vehicle safety (including automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, and recreational vehicles), vehicle safety defects, and motor vehicle equipment such as child safety seats and air bags.  You may speak with a consultant who will file a report on your vehicle's safety problem and provide you with recall and other beneficial information.  All of these services are also available by mail or fax from the Hotline and through the Internet at www.nhtsa.dot.gov/hotline where you can file your vehicle complaint online.  Your report can help ODI examine the problem you are experiencing with your vehicle and determine if a recall and remedy by the manufacturer will be required at no cost to you.
