ATRI releases analysis of Maine truck weights
The analysis found that traveling a slightly longer route with higher average speeds resulted in less fuel consumed and fewer emissions than traveling on a route with lower average speeds, numerous speed limit changes and traffic signals.


TCA creates new 'Open Deck' Division
The Truckload Carriers Association will launch an "Open Deck" Division, a special subgroup that will allow member carriers who operate open haul equipment to meet with their peers to discuss problems, share ideas and seek solutions unique to their specialized area of operations.

Spartan Motors to acquire Utilimaster for $45M
Spartan Motors will acquire Utilimaster Corp. – a manufacturer of specialty vehicles made to customer specifications in the delivery and service market, including walk-in vans and hi-cube vans, as well as truck bodies – from John Hancock Life Insurance Co. for about $45 million.


Study: Freight rail fuel efficiency climbing
The Federal Railroad Administration has released a study showing vast improvements in freight rail fuel efficiency during the last two decades, about 22 percent between 1990 and 2006.
