INDOT to replace rest area

By Deirdra Drinkard

The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to close the aging westbound rest area on Interstate 70 near mile marker 144, starting the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 30.

A new welcome center, bringing the state's total to 7, will be built to expand truck parking from 24 to more than 150 spaces. Bids have been submitted on the plans, which include improved restroom facilities and public utilities that will be connected with the new facility. The water lines will allow removal of a wastewater treatment plant and water well system that is costly to maintain.

INDOT is reviewing the $11.7 million low bid by Milestone Contractors of Columbus, and should announce an official contract award within a week.
