TRALA announces appointments

By Successful Dealer Staff

Thomas James was unanimously chosen by the Board of Directors for the Truck Renting and Leasing Association (TRALA) as the new president and chief executive officer. The association also announced that Mark Catlin, national account executive for J.J. Keller & Associates, Inc., has been selected to serve as TRALA’s 2010 Annual Meeting chairman.

James has served since July 2009 as TRALA’s acting president and chief executive officer. He has spent his 24-year career in a range of public and private sector positions working on legislative and regulatory issues. Prior to his current responsibilities, he was TRALA’s senior vice president of Government Relations. He was responsible for leading the successful advocacy efforts of TRALA on behalf of the industry, including the multi-year effort that culminated in the nationwide elimination of vicarious liability for owners of rented and leased vehicles. Before joining TRALA in 2002, James served as senior vice president of the Furman Group and represented clients on a wide range of issues focusing on infrastructure and natural resources.

“It is an honor to be named president and chief executive officer of TRALA. TRALA’s central mission of advocacy on behalf of the industry will continue to be the associations’ number one priority. The vehicle renting and leasing industry will face many new challenges over the coming years. I am ready to begin working with our members and board of directors to meet these challenges and advance such issues as protecting the industry from unfair fees and taxes, overly burdensome lease accounting standards and attacks on the federal law repealing vicarious liability enacted several years ago,” said James.

Speaking of Catlin’s appointment, James said, “TRALA’s leadership is pleased to have an individual as dedicated to the transportation industry leading our membership and staff in the preparation for our 2010 Annual Meeting. Mark and the entire team at J.J. Keller have been tremendous supporters of our industry and association over the years. I know that with Mark at the helm, TRALA’s Annual Meeting will continue to be the premier event for the entire vehicle renting and leasing industry.”

In his capacity as national account executive at J.J. Keller, Catlin is responsible for the development, management and ongoing relationships for all their third party partnerships. He also is responsible for support of the Field Sales Group providing technical and sales engineering support in the respective sales. Catlin manages all the national trade show and user groups for J.J. Keller & Associates by attending and exhibiting at 15 to 20 shows per year.

Over 30 years ago, Catlin started as a customer service representative for J.J. Keller & Associates and moved through the ranks to his current managerial position. “I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as TRALA’s 2010 Annual Meeting chairman,” said Catlin. “I look forward to planning the upcoming TRALA Annual Meeting and highlighting the successful role the truck renting and leasing industry is playing in commercial transportation and the overall North American economy.”
