TCA honored with race title

Number 4, Caviar’s Dream, won the surrey race named for the Truckload Carriers Association at the Woodbine Raceway in Toronto Nov. 2.

A standard-bred horserace at the Woodbine Raceway in Toronto was renamed, briefly, The Truckload Carriers Association Race Nov. 2, as part of an industry promotion, said TCA vice president Deborah Sparks.

TCA President Kevin Burch, who was a guest at the racetrack, presented the owner of Caviar’s Dream, the winning horse, a special trophy declaring him the “winner of the Truckload Carriers Association Race.”

Kim Richardson, publisher of the Canadian-based trucking trade journal, The Rear View Mirror, made arrangements for Burch to present the award while he and Jeff Davis, vice president of safety and human resources for Jet Express, were in Toronto. Davis had been asked to make a presentation at a seminar in Toronto on CSA 2010, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's initiative to develop more efficient and effective ways of overseeing motor carrier safety.

“We’re always looking for new ways to expose the general public to the trucking industry, and this was an unusual and positive way to do it,” said Burch, who is said to own race horses.
