NAFTA surface trade fell in August

Surface transportation trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico declined 24.9 percent in August from a year earlier, dropping to $54.3 billion, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The agency said trade rose 5.3 percent in August from July 2009. Total truck imports to the United States dropped 19.8 percent to $18.4 billion from a year earlier, while exports decreased 16.1 percent to $20.1 billion.
Trade with Canada fell 29.6 percent to $32.9 billion. The value of truck imports to the U.S. dropped 26.1 percent and the value of truck exports declined 17 percent.
U.S.-Mexico trade was down 16.2 percent to $21.3 billion. The value of truck imports fell 13.5 percent and the value of truck exports decreased 14.7 percent.
Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline. About 88 percent of U.S. trade among NAFTA partners moves by land.
