I-465 section closed in Indianapolis

By eTrucker Staff

Interstate 465 near I-69/Binford Boulevard in Indianapolis remains closed today, Oct. 23, pending emergency bridge inspections and testing of steel bridge beams following a propane tanker explosion.

A truck in combination with a cargo tank semitrailer loaded with liquid propane, rolled over yesterday morning while traveling southbound on I-69 in Indianapolis. The cargo tank was ruptured, resulting in an explosion and post-crash fire.

The crash and subsequent fire severely damaged the highway bridge used to carry traffic on I-465 over the access ramp.

I-465 westbound has been reopened between the I-69 northbound exit ramp and the ramp entering from I-69 southbound. I-465 eastbound, which is directly over the crash scene, remains closed between U.S. 31/Meridian Street and the 56th Street/Shadeland Avenue interchanges.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating. More than a dozen engineers and inspectors from the Indiana Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, Purdue University School of Civil Engineering and private bridge contractors are participating in ongoing inspections.
