CARB list covers reefer rule options
By eTrucker Staff
New at the California Air Resources Board’s website is a list of verified options for owners of reefer units of 2002 and older vintage running within the state’s borders to comply with the upgrade or retrofit deadline of Dec. 31. After this date, says CARB, “all noncompliant TRUs will be cited and penalties up to $500 per unit will be assessed.”
To comply, a diesel-powered reefer unit with an engine of 2002 or older model year must be retrofit with a Level 2 diesel particulate filter (to reduce particulate matter 50 percent) or replaced. If retrofitting, compliance with a regulation coming online at the end of 2010 should also be considered by owner-operators and fleets; this regulation requires 2003 and older models to be retrofit with more effective Level 3 dpfs (to reduce particulate matter by 85 percent) or replaced.
Visit http://www.arb.ca.gov/diesel/tru.htm for the full list of CARB-verified and approved compliance technologies, which include options for both retrofit and replacement with either updated diesel or alternative fuel technologies.
