Florida plans safe driver week
By Jill Dunn
Florida will have its motor carrier compliance officers out in full force Oct. 18-24 in marked and unmarked vehicles, targeting aggressive driving and traffic violations. Florida’s Department of Transportation Office of Motor Carrier Compliance will participate in Operation Safe Driver that week. In 2008, nearly 200,000 people were injured in Florida because of unsafe or aggressive driving practices.
Officers will be performing driver safety inspections with radar and laser speed measurement to target excessive speeds, occupants without seatbelts, unsafe lane changes and violations of Florida’s Move Over Law. This law requires drivers to move away from stopped emergency vehicles when possible or drive 20 mph below the speed limit or to 5 mph when the speed limit is 20 mph or less.
Officers not patrolling will do outreach presentations to motor carriers and distribute educational materials statewide.
Since 2007, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance has partnered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and others, including the American Trucking Associations for this annual campaign. The objective is to reduce deaths involving large trucks.
During last month’s safe driver program, Pennsylvania placed 86 vehicles and 73 drivers out of service
