Mother flings twins into the Mississippi

ST. PAUL, Minn., Jul 06, 2003 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- A woman has been charged with throwing her infant twin sons off a bridge into the Mississippi River, killing one of them.

Twenty-four-year-old Naomi Gaines threw her babies 75 feet into the river, then plunged in herself Friday night in front of thousands attending the annual Taste of Minnesota, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported Sunday.

A spectator jumped into the water and saved Gaines and one of the babies. Searchers as of Sunday night had not found the other baby, presumed drowned in the raging current.

Gaines was charged with two counts of attempted murder Sunday. She was hospitalized in St. Paul with possible internal injuries, the newspaper reported.

The surviving twin was hospitalized in stable condition and expected to be placed with relatives.

Witnesses told police Gaines shouted as she threw each child over the rail of the Wabansha Street Bridge. But, police said, there was no advance warning.
