Convoy heads for U.S. Capitol

A group calling itself Truckers and Citizens United has organized an April 28 convoy from Harrisburg, Pa., to RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., from which the protesters plan to shuttle to the west front lawn of the U.S. Capitol for a rally against diesel prices.
Led by Pennsylvania owner-operator Mark Kirsch and J.B. Schaffner of the website The American Driver , members of the group hoped to meet with members of Congress to air their grievances. The group urged motorists and business travelers to join the event, which already involved participants from 26 states, the group said in a press release.
“America can’t afford another winter at these energy prices,” Kirsch said in brief comments just before heading into a meeting. “The movement is snowballing, and we’re not going to stop until we see them come down to where they should be.”
The April 28 convoy began at the Gables Truck Stop at Exit 77 from I-81 in Harrisburg, Pa. Similar trucker demonstrations, organized by various individuals and groups, have been held at scattered locations nationwide in recent weeks as the price of diesel has hit record highs. For the week ending April 21, it was $4.14 a gallon.
“This was a groundswell movement,” Kirsch said. “Truckers are parking their trucks because they can’t afford to haul freight. Businesses are going under, and folks haven’t seen Washington do a darned thing about it.”
The group’s website urges sympathetic citizens to call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to tell their senators and representatives about their concerns. The group also is calling for a May Day shutdown, “Round Two,” from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time Thursday, May 1.
