Truckers have until Feb. 14 to comment on a plan to merge medical certificate information into the CDL process.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration proposal would meet the requirements of the Motor Carrier Safety Improvement Act of 1999. That requires interstate CDL holders subject to the physical qualification requirement to provide their medical examiner’s certificate to their state driver licensing agency.
The proposal would make that information available to authorized personnel through the Commercial Driver License Information System and the National Law Enforcement Telecommunication System electronic inquiries. It would also be on the CDLIS motor vehicle record obtained by drivers and employers.
CDL drivers would no longer have to carry the medical examiner’s certificate because their certification status would be verified electronically.
