The opening of the U.S./Mexico border to Mexican trucks may occur by the end of June, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
However, it will likely take several weeks from the border opening until Mexican carriers actually enter the U.S., as they undergo extensive paperwork reviews and safety audits in the application process, said FMCSA spokesman David Longo.
Also, Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta must first establish that opening the border does not present a security risk, and this won’t be determined until a report on the matter is issued next month by the Department of Transportation’s inspector general.
In the meantime, FMCSA continues to hire auditors, who will begin to process applications of Mexican carriers once the border is opened, Longo said.
