The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has reopened the comment period on its proposal to exempt some insulin-using diabetic commercial drivers from diabetes-related license restrictions.
Feb. 4 is the new deadline for those wanting to comment on the FMCSA proposal.
The proposed regulation, announced last July, would exempt select drivers from the diabetes mellitus prohibitions contained in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. The exemption would apply to CDL and non-CDL commercial license holders who have had a clean driving record for three years, while taking insulin to treat their diabetes. These drivers would undergo a rigorous medical examination, then closely monitor their blood glucose level, report any change in their driving record, and be reexamined at regular intervals.
Comments on this proposal can be submitted at dms.dot.gov; or mailed to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Dockets Management Facility, Room PL-401, 400 Seventh St. SW, Washington, DC 20590-0001.
The docket number is FMCSA-2001-9800.
